1989 Look Who's Talking

After years in the doldrums, 70's star John Travolta was back. Yet, not as audiences expected to see him, dancing and singing. No, he was back and this time he was with a talking baby that sounded a lot like Bruce Willis.

Hollywood throws up some curious films, and this is no exception. the fact that it became one of the biggest hits of 1989 is even more curious.

Kirstie Alley, of Cheers fame, is a single mother in search of the perfect father figure for her son Mikey. She meets John Travolta and the two hit it off. Most of the film is told from the point of view of Mikey, who explains exactly what is going on via his inner Bruce Willis.

The film was a surprise hit during 1989 (in the UK it opened in 1990), also rebooting Bruce Willis back to the front of peoples minds after the mixed reaction to his non Die Hard movies. Willis and Travolta would appear again, not only in the inevitable sequels to this movie, but in a little gangster pic called Pulp Fiction.

Amy Heckerling wrote and directed Look Who's Talking and shot the film on a $7m budget. It grossed a massive $297m. The two sequels, as is most often the case, dropped off the further away they became.

It's a fun film which charms while it sits with you and then filters away as you move on. The unique concept helped to make it the success it was, and the comedy is funny, notably from the baby's voice over. Like many a film in the 80's, it should have remained as a one-hit wonder.

The merch on this movie is non-existent, so I present links to the movies and that is it. Surely this deserves a T-shirt of some kind, with one of Willis's lines about breasts!
