1985 The Jewel of the Nile

Of the top five in the year 1985 only one film failed to pass over the coveted $100m mark, and that was this.

Romancing the Stone proved to be a hit the year before, with a meagre budget it stormed the box office and passed over that threshold so wanted by movie studios. A sequel was now a certainty, and all the major players agreed to return apart from one, the director Robert Zemeckis, he was off to make a small movie called Back to the Future.

Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas have great chemistry, part of the success of the first movie, that continues in this sequel released only a year later. They are clearly having fun as the romance writer hurled into situations beyond her control and aided by Douglas' rogue charmer. It's sort of Indiana Jones but set now (then, 80's).

These are fun movies, and while the first movie is the better of the two Nile is still a great ride, bringing Danny De Vito back as the nice/nasty guy Ralph.

The plot? Well, it sort of makes sense and requires lots of set pieces, much like most movies in this era really. The setting is wonderful to look at, a contrast to the dark of the first movie, this is in sunshine with sand and blue skies.

There is also, and I imagine you either know where this is going or you are going to fall off your chair in surprise, a song to go along with the release of the movie. Billy Ocean has probably his biggest hit with 'When the Going Gets Tough'. The video to accompany the release featured the cast dancing and singing along.

It's fun. Cinema should be fun. You should be able to have fun, and these movies give you a thrill-ride that you should enjoy guilt-free.

The soundtrack is rare, and only now available second-hand; if it is not on the link below it is worth searching for.
