1986 The Karate Kid Part II

When you hear Peter Cetera crying out with all his might, 'The Glory of Love', you know you're in for one of those movies that lifts your heart and spirit.

The sequel to the 1984 movie is bigger and bolder, taking our young fighter to Japan where his master, Mr Miyagi, is visiting his dying father as well as taking on an old foe. Daniel has to fight for honour and the girl that he has fallen in love with.

The cast return, as does director John G. Avildsen, and while it is not quite as good as the original it still holds up well. Especially in light of the weaker sequels to come. Ralph Macchio, now looking more like a young man than a kid, does a good job with the material and the story has pace, albeit following a similar formula to what came before, only in a different setting.

Japan is well presented in this movie, and looks wonderful. Only what is meant to be Okinowa is in fact Hawaii, as Okinowa is made up primarily with military bases. Okinowan born Hawaiian residents were used as extras in this movie.

With a budget of $13m, the movie managed to take $115m at the box office. Better than its predecessor, and this would be the series high. It sits at number 5 in this years chart.
