1981 Stripes

Hollywood is full of connections. You will find one project has some connection to another which leads to another and forms this beautiful whole...sometimes anyway.

Take the 1981 screwball comedy Stripes, starring Bill Murray, who was following his SNL predecessor, Chevy Chase, into lead roles in movies. Not only was this the debut film for the likes of John Candy and Judge Reinhold, it was also a precursor to Ghostbusters. Here's how.

Dan Aykroyd had written Ghostbusters for him and his friend John Belushi, who died in 1982 before filming began. Stripes was written by and co-starred Harold Ramis, who was playing alongside Murray for director Ivan Reitman. Stripes was a success, and Ramis, Murray and Reitman were hot property, and there was this script kicking around about ghosts and paranormal activity which was just a bit, out there.

Ramis came on board and reformed the script, tried to make it more budget friendly and with Reitman fashioned it into something more realistic, hey presto, a franchise was born.

Without Stripes, we could very well not have had Ghostbusters.

Here's something I have found, very rare and not cheap, but movie- lovers should go for it!
