1980 The Blues Brothers
The Blues Brothers were born from a late 70's sketch from the popular comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live.
To get a stint on Saturday Night Live meant you had made it. Without it we would not have Bill Murray, or Robin Williams or the genius Andy Kaufman. At this time it's biggest stars were Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Dan Aykroyd and the manic John Belushi.
Belushi had found cinema fame with Animal House. This propelled the SNL stars into movie stars and led the way for The Jerk, from Steve Martin and National Lampoon's with Chevy Chase. The Blues Brothers was hoping to set the world on fire with music.
The film was directed by John Landis and written by Aykroyd. It features a host of blues and soul stars including Aretha Franklin and James Brown and also contains cameos from the likes of Carrie Fisher and Steven Spielberg.
The movie is crazy. It features one of the longest and most expensive car chases ever put to screen. However, the film did not translate well to audiences and at the time it was considered a flop, even though it hit number two in the worldwide takings with $115m.
Yet it rose to life with a killer soundtrack album and a release onto video, where it found a new audience and has since become a cult classic.
Belushi sadly died from a drug overdose after this film and before he could make his appearance in Ghostbusters. In 2000, backed by seeming public demand, Blues Brothers 2000 was released with John Goodman in the Belushi role. History repeated itself and the movie flopped, only this time, there was no renaissance on video.
