1985 Back to the Future

Steven Spielberg was on top of the world during 1985. His new television series had been commissioned, Amazing Stories; and he had two movies out one of which would become a worldwide hit. It seemed that he had too many stories to tell, and not enough time to direct them. His one directorial effort of this year was The Color Purple, for which he was famously snubbed for best director at the Oscars. The monster hit was a small movie about a time travelling kid who meets his parents when they were teens.

Back to the Future was the brainchild of Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis. Who had previously collaborated on a couple of Spielberg produced movies, both of which flopped. It was only after success with Romancing the Stone that Zemeckis was allowed to direct his long-gestated project Back to the Future. How Hollywood works!

Originally slated to star Michael J. Fox, the directors request was denied because Fox was a major star in hit sitcom family Ties and could not be released. So filming began with Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly. But for Zemeckis the comedy was not working, so he insisted and Fox, who desperately wanted to be involved, agreed to a gruelling schedule of filming Family Ties in the day and BTTF in the night. It paid off.

The movie garnered excellent reviews and took a gross of $381m worldwide. It launched a franchise and a fan club, and even helped DeLorean. Two sequels followed, to mixed reviews, but the legacy still stands and fans flock to see Fox and his co-star Christopher Lloyd from all around the world. A musical version of the film being the latest addition. For everyone involved, it made their career.
