1984 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
From 1980 to 1984, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg had the honour of producing or directing the most successful film at the worldwide box office.
In 1984, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was the biggest movie of the year, beating the likes of Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters.
It was shot mainly in India and is a prequel to Raiders. Set in 1935, we find Indy reaching the end of a mission in China, only to be double-crossed which sets him on a path to India and a quest to recover the Sankara Stones and a tussle with the Thugees.
It is a much darker movie than its predecessor, but has much humour and some excellent set-pieces.
The film garnered a huge $333m at the worldwide box office. It proved a hit with youngsters and while it was seen as the weakest of the trilogy, the production of a fourth movie has given it a far more favourable legacy.
It is also the movie where Spielberg met his future wife, Kate Capshaw.
